BALLYHEIGUE NOTES – Michael Burkett
PATTERN DAY: We look forward to our annual Pattern Day in Ballyheigue at
Our Lady’s Well and Grotto, on next Monday 8th September, the Birthday of
Our Lady. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Ray Browne at 11.00am. It is
in accordance with the spirit of the Pattern to leave the Grotto car park
for the very elderly and disabled. Please be there by 10.00am to avoid
disappointment, free car parking. We pray that our devotion to Mary will
bring many graces and favours to our community.
PATTERN “TRASHER” GATTERING: The White Sands Hotel is the place to be this
Sunday night (the eve of the Pattern) as the Pattern Festival festivities
get under way. In the ballroom at 8.00pm the Junior Presentation will take
place where the Guest of Honour will be Rev. Fr. Tom Leane P.P..
A lovely programme is planned which will feature a medley of talent from
the North Kerry region, but especially from our parish. Parents will be
treated to a performance of various dancing styles from Causeway-Ballyduff
region while the Lixnaw Branch of Comhaltas with many All-Ireland medal
winners will stage a show of the very best of traditional music.
The Ballyheigue Drama Group will perform Our Lady of the Well, a well
crafted song from the newly launched CD John Lucid will play the evocative
Brian Ború March as part of the tribute to the High King’s success at
Clontarf. Traditional singer Mary Lucid will round off the Presentation in
honour of Our Lady with her rendition of A Mhuire Mháthair S’é Seo Mo Ghuí.
At 9.30 Cllr. John Brassil chairman of the Co. Council and Mayor of Kerry
will perform the Official Opening of the Pattern “Thrasher” Festival of
Traditional Culture. This will be followed by a major trad. Session in the
Hotel.
So Ballyheigue is the place to be on Sunday 7th September, the eve of the
famous Pattern Day. Everyone is welcome especially musicians and singers.
TENACITY SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS: A new term begins on Saturday 6thSeptember
in Na Gaeil Football Club Tralee. The school has been established for
almost twenty years and students can learn all styles of dance, Vocals,
Acting and Drama. Cost ten euro per week for two hours. If interested

Classes were held all this summer in Bud’s in Ballyduff.
ACTIVE RETIREMENT GROUP: Here is an opportunity to meet and make new
friends. The local Active Retirement Group will restart meeting again on
Wednesday 10th September from 11.00am to 1.00pm. We welcome new members;
come along and join our group and enjoy, at least, a chat with friends and
help us provide activities attractive to all members. We meet in the Family
Resource Centre, Sraid Thaidhg, Cliff Road, Ballyheigue. (086-0815944

GAA LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn at last Saturday night’s GAA
Lotto: 9-16-17-21. . The Jackpot of €4,000 was not won. Next week’s
Jackpot will be €4,050.The two €50 winners were: Criss Powers, “Tides” and
Edmond Coridon, Mountway. The €25 winner was din Joe Mahony, C/o Pat Joe.
KERRY MINOR HURLERS: Best of luck to Michael Leane and Brian Riordan and
the Kerry Minor Hurling team who play Meath in the All-Ireland Championship
Final on Saturday next. Hopefully we will have two All-Ireland Medals in
Ballyheigue on Saturday evening.
FIXTURE: North Kerry Under-14 hurling Championship Final Ballyheigue v St.
Brendan’s at Dromakee Saturday next 4 pm. The winning Captain will be
presented with the Todd Nolan memorial Shield.
COURSING LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn on Monday 25th August in
the Ballyheigue Coursing Club Lotto – 15-18-23-29. No Jackpot winner. The
€50 winner was Mary Quill, C/o Mike. The €25 winners were Stacey Higgins,
John Joe Carroll and Mike Carroll. Next week’s Jackpot €1,950.
